It wasn't obvious to me if I could cancel towers themselves, to boot. At least, I couldn't find a way to do so. I had an instance where a gem node popped out of an enemy structure and just happened to land on a tower-building spot. My hero ended up building a tower instead of retrieving that gem and I couldn't correct for it. T'was somewhat frustrating.
As far as I can tell this is partly because Armories turn into different structures every time you start an upgrade. As a result they're also removed from existing control groups when you start an upgrade. I'm assuming the same thing happens with towers as well.
