RTS in browser

I found this article some time ago: http://blog.artillery.com/2013/09/project-atlas-and-the-artillery-platform.html

I signed up for updates back when hoping to see a browser based RTS, but I see there is a client download. What changed between this article and the current platform? Why the change?

All the answers can be found here: http://blog.artillery.com/2015/09/artillery-native-game-client.html

tl; dr: Javascript is slow, C++ is fast.

  • It's too bad that browsers are at a crossroads for serious gaming. While they try to push HTML5, HTML5 itself is still not as full featured as game engines based upon C++. At the same time, Google's banned most plugins (and Mozilla is following and Microsoft with Edge as well). I'm surprised Artillery didn't go down the Unity route...but I guess with Google kicking it out, the added benefit of being able to do Desktop, Mobile, and Web with little changes wouldn't actually be realized.

Kudos to the team for trying to push the technology to its current limits.
